Beagle Puppies Are Popular
The popularity of beagles has been enhanced by their appearance in movies, television and cartoons. Their fun loving nature and even temperament make them easily trained and easy to work with in a variety of situations. Some of the depictions of the beagle puppy, such as the "Peanuts" cartoon strip has made the breed one of the most famous in the world. A little love goes a long way with the beagle that has a way of endearing themselves with their owners.
The beagle is known to be a little like children in wanting to play, especially with other members of their household. The dogs are extremely intelligent and can learn new behaviors quickly and then to please their owners, want to show off what they have learned. If the beagle puppy has been around other dogs from their birth, their social skills will develop quicker making them ready to accept a place in a new environment.
Very few beagles will be kept outdoors, despite their heritage of being a hunting dog. Their small size and genuine appeal make them a great indoor pet, yet they will require room to run and jump to work off some of their natural energy. The highly developed sense of smell possessed by the breed makes them eager for a hunt, but if they cannot get outside to find a new scent, they can be equally happy to sniff out fun with other family members.
However, this penchant for hunting can also be hindrance for their training as their short attention span can quickly allow the distraction of a strange scent to take over as they head out in search of its source. A beagle puppy may be willing to learn but a new smell will divert their learning into a game of hide and seek. If the puppy is allowed to roam free in a yard, they may disappear on the trail of a different scent.
This ability to track scents has made them valuable employees of several government agencies, as well as with avid hunters. A beagle puppy can be trained to help search for contraband in some very tight spaces where larger dogs have no hope of being able to fit.
In some surroundings, such as airport where many people and children can quickly be intimidated by a large dog, a beagle puppy can be trained to search for contraband in luggage terminals as well as in finding illegal substances sought by agricultural departments.
Many times imports are quarantined when they enter the company until they can be inspected for suspect goods. Agricultural products may have an item in them that cannot be allowed in and trained beagles are often used to help find such products hidden inside a shipment of otherwise acceptable goods.
While many still use the beagle breed for hunting purposes, they are more in demand as friendly and loyal pets.
