Texas Palm Decline Invades Florida

Landscaping-Outdoor-Decorating No Comments »
by Russ Frank

Texas Palm Decline (TPD), also known as Texas Phoenix Palm Decline (TPPD), was first discovered in the southern coastal region of Texas in the late 1970's. This palm decline disease is relatively new in Florida, first discovered in 2006.

This palm decline disease is very similar to Lethal Yellowing. Hundreds of thousands of palms have been killed in south Florida since the 1950's by Lethal Yellowing. The disease appears to be spread by an insect feeding on the sap of an infected palm. As the insect feeds on other palms, the disease is spread.

Texas Palm Decline was discovered in the west central region of Florida and appears set to ravage thousands of expensive Canary Island Date palms, edible date palms, and wild date palms. These palms can cost from $5,000 to $10,000 apiece.

Other palms affected include the Queen palm, which is less expensive but much more numerous., and the Sabal palm, a Florida native and the Florida state tree. The presence of Texas Palm Decline has been confirmed in Polk, Pinellas, Hillsborough, Manatee and Sarasota counties in west central Florida. Experts predict the palm decline disease will spread as palms are often bought, sold and moved throughout Florida.

Texas Palm Decline exhibits symptoms that include lower fronds that turn brown, death of the spear leaf (the youngest unfolded frond), premature death or fronds, premature death of fruit and flowers, premature fruit drop, and eventually death of the palm itself.

Don't jump to conclusions if your palms exhibit one or more of these Texas Palm Decline symptoms. Nutrient deficiencies, overpruning, lightning damage, insect damage, and herbicide damage, can cause similar symptoms.

If you have concerns about Texas Palm Decline, and whether your palms are infected, the next step is to call a certified arborist or a palm expert. They will sort out the symptoms and prepare samples for a lab to test. Lab confirmation of Texas Phoenix Palm Decline in the palm will require the removal of the palm. It is in the best interest of the community to protect the remaining palms fro further spread of the palm decline disease.

If the spear leaf of your palm has not died, but Texas Palm Decline symptoms currently exist, the palm may be saved with regular injections of oxytetracycline Hcl, an antibiotic. These injections, which must continue every 4 months for the life of the palm, can offer protection from palm decline.. This same antibiotic program may also be used on healthy palms to prevent Texas Phoenix Palm Decline when the disease is known to occur in the area.

Enhance Your Yard with an Outdoor Structure

Landscaping-Outdoor-Decorating No Comments »
by Tim Duke

Everyone loves garden structures and what they bring to the yards and gardens they're in. However, when it's you and you're trying to decide which one to choose it can be overwhelming. A good rule of thumb is to look at your family's activities and create a space that will work best around that activity whether that be gardening or swimming pool parties.

One of the easiest to define is the trellis. Trellises are traditionally used in flower beds and gardens. You will also find them outside up against walls or the sides of a home or out building directing the growth of vines. Seldom seen is the trellis that stands alone in the middle of a yard but that's not to say that it isn't done. They are versatile and come in many different shapes and sizes including small ones for potted plants.

You can also use arbors with lattice or decorative sides as a trellis. Arbors allow you to create an entrance or archway into a special area of the yard or into the yard itself. Arbors are very popular as entrances into gardens and are used throughout gardens to create sitting or viewing areas. Arbors can make beautiful stand alone areas in your yard with the right climbing vine such as the climbing rose.

A larger structure that can be a stand alone or combined with your porch or patio is a pergola. Pergolas are unique in that they have the same canopy capabilities as arbors with the right plant choices but they also provide shade in the mornings and evenings due to the slatted nature of the roof. Creating a sitting area under a pergola is a great way to enjoy one of these fine structures and some pergolas came with optional chairs and/or tables built in.

One of the largest outdoor structures that are really fun is the gazebo. Gazebos are natural gathering places and can be used anywhere in the yard where you want people to be able to congregate and have a good time. They can be easily used beside a swimming pool or out in the yard all by itself. They are beautiful and always ready for a party or private dinner and are very versatile.

You won't hear much about raised beds and bridges because, even though you will see both all the time, they blend in with the landscape more than stick out as an overpowering structure. Raised beds are great to place in your yard and allow you to create a flowerbed without digging up anything, anywhere. For areas that have low lying spots or water features you would like to enhance, bridges work very well. As stated before, these get lost in the landscape but if you look, you will see them everywhere.

About the Author:
Finding a natural wood bridge to improve your landscape can be a challenge. However, the addition of raised beds to your landscaping is easy an inexpensive and can add unbelievable beauty to your yard.

Extra Insurance for a Summer Barbecue - Buy a Garden Gazebo!

Landscaping-Outdoor-Decorating No Comments »
by Andy Mason

Are you looking for a way to enjoy your garden even when the weather isn't as great as you hoped for? If so then why not think about getting yourself a gazebo. Gazebos not only provide you with another room to your home but make spending time out in the garden not only more comfortable but more enjoyable.

When you start looking at gazebos for your garden you will soon discover there are plenty of different shapes, sizes and styles to choose from. However, in most cases people will tend to purchase the octagonal open sided type of gazebos that come with a cupola and double wood and have been constructed from wood. Although there are plenty of different types of gazebos to choose from you are sure to find one that not only meets your size of garden, requirements but budget as well.

The diameter sizes of gazebos range from ones as small as 6 feet to ones that are 22 feet and may well have no walls so that you can enjoy all aspects of your garden. However, there are some gazebos that do have walls and you could if you wanted to use this structure as a guesthouse. Although the designs of these structures are very simple they are durable and may have added embellishments to further enhance their looks such as trellis walls or Victorian mouldings.

Before you go out and purchase your gazebo the first thing to do is decide where in your garden you intend to place it. If you are not sure about what is the most appropriate location for yours then talk to an architect or builder first. These people may also be able to provide answers to questions regarding placement and erection of your gazebo that you may not have considered.

You may discover that the gazebo needs to be located a distance of more than say 20 feet from any other structures or property boundaries. However, a quick call to the local planning authority office should enable to find out what needs to be done and what regulations you need to meet in order to get a gazebo built in your garden.

When it comes to determining where is the most appropriate location for your gazebo you need to take into consideration what size of garden you have and how it has been laid out. If say for example you have some sort of water feature, say a pond then why not consider locating your gazebo in close proximity to it.

Something else that you need to remember when you are thinking of getting gazebos is what materials you want it to be constructed from as well as what style you have chosen. If you are going for one that comes with extra features such as decking then you need to have ample space to erect it so it won't encroach on to other areas of your garden.

Generally most people as we mention tend to go for gazebos that are constructed from wood for their gardens, but they come in a wide range of other materials as well. Certainly if you are looking for a structure that requires a lot less maintenance and still looks attractive there are plenty of gazebos made from steel, iron or aluminium that you can purchase today.

As you can see, a garden gazebo can be extremely useful, especially given the mixed climates in some countries. There are a wide range to purchase online including garden marquees if you have a big garden or a lot of guests!

Have a majestic looking deck with the help of Victorian railings

Landscaping-Outdoor-Decorating No Comments »
by Adam Peters

This article gives information about Victorian railings. It emphasizes on the beauty and dignity that this style of railing can bestow to a deck.

Victorian railings are so called as they symbolize the architecture and style of the Victorian age. During this time, England witnessed the industrial revolution but this age was specifically named after Queen Victoria who reigned in splendor over England from 1837 to 1901. The distinctive feature of this style is a sense of majesty and imposing beauty.

In recent times, Victorian railings have begun to be used as a statement of style. However, what one needs to remember is that during the Victorian era houses were designed in a magnificent and opulent manner. In fact, the houses as well as the designs of the railings, pathways and doors were seen to indicate the social position of the owner. This is especially the reason why Victorian railings have intricate designs and are very high on visual impact. Having such railings on the deck can radically alter the look of the deck. The only requirement for installing these railings, however, is that that the house should also be able to match up to the beauty of the railings and should present a splendid appearance.

If you have decided to opt for Victorian railings on the deck, it is essential that you select the appropriate materials for constructing them. If you live in an area that receives plenty of rainfall or is susceptible to moisture, then wood should not be used as wood decomposes very rapidly in such conditions. In this scenario, iron can be used as it is very sturdy and is blessed with longevity if it is protected with a high quality lacquer finish so that it is not affected by corrosive elements in the atmosphere.

In the absence of such a finish, iron might also be vulnerable to moisture. Apart from this, iron also has the benefit of precision manufacturing whereby complicated and beautiful designs in the Victorian style can be obtained from this material. If you opt for vinyl railings, you do not have to worry about moisture. The problem with vinyl, though, is that it gets damaged in hot weather conditions. However, with modern technology producing vinyl that can withstand hot weather conditions, vinyl can be a good option for Victorian railings.

If your house has been designed in the Victorian style of architecture, then constructing a deck and railings in the same style would present a grand and beautiful appearance. Do make sure to comply with the building codes applicable to your area when installing these railings, so that you are safe from accidents of any nature.

If you have any doubts about Victorian railings as far as materials, designs and installation is concerned then you can rely on the Internet to provide you with all the information that you want.
