If you have special dreams of becoming a famous singing star, you must already assume that you have to be disciplined and ready to work as hard as you can to achieve your goals. Remember that to be a good singer, make sure you get your foundation firmly set in basics of singing. After you get a good start in the understanding of what a beginning singer should know, you can gradually learn about the nuts and bolts of singing for every serious singer.

Most singers think about intonation all the time, whether they are in middle of practice or a high-pressure performance. A singer does not want to sing out of tune and have people notice as it makes them feel very inadequate and self-conscious. While you are singing and during your voice lessons, make sure you learn how to recognize and prevent poor intonation.

Next, singers need to work on strengthening their breath support so that their breath supports their singing. Every time you practice or perform in front of an audience, make sure the air is flowing through your lungs so that your voice is fully heard. When you breathe properly, you will find that your voice is stronger and clearer than it was before.

Having a solid grasp of the basics of singing is an extremely important part of any singing that you do, whether you are looking to sing in public or just for a few friends. You will find that learning about these basics and being mindful of them will sharpen up your performance along with making sure that you understand any flaws or weaknesses your voice has. You will have more self-confidence if you have a firm foundation.

Rhythm in a song and the way you sing are fundamental to a good song. Listen to your favorite song by a professional singer so that you can into the real feeling and emotions that carry the song. The right rhythmic flow as a lot to do with the success of a song. There's no good song without rhythm.

Diction is an important part of the way you communicate as a singer to the audience. If no one understands what you are singing, then it will be disappointing. Your voice is an instrument which must be cared for and treated with sensitivity as any other musical instrument. You might have some drawbacks and restrictions with your voice, but with discipline and practice you can develop techniques to rise above them.

When you are looking to improve your singing voice, you will find that understanding the basics can give you a place to start off from, where you can figure out what you need to strive towards and work on. Your voice teacher or your online singing course can outline for you the things you absolutely need to know if you aspire to be a singer. Find it your number one priority to learn the fundamentals of voice.

Take into account that learning and applying the fundamentals of singing to your performances will give you the upper hand if you are singing in a competition or with others. Make it your main concern that you utilize all that you know in your performance and practice as a singer. You will be very pleased with yourself, and well on your way in developing as a fine singer as you continue to improve with practice and awareness.

Reading at home

Do you want your child to be a better reader? It's very easy for parents to help their children learn to read. You don't have to be a good reader yourself but you do have to want the best for your child.

You don't have to read lengthy books to help your child become a great reader. You don't need to spend a huge amount of time reading with your child. You don't have to spend a lot of money on books. You don't have to take expensive classes to know what to do and how to get started.

Let's begin this article by talking about what you CAN do. Here are some practical and simple ideas. If you want to get some ideas about supporting the school's reading program volunteer as a reading helper and talk with your child's teacher about what to do at home.

You can lay the foundations that will help your child become a lifelong reader. Their world will be expanded and enriched by reading experiences that you can provide with only a short, consistent time commitment each day. The benefits are immeasurable.

Children need to be excited and stimulated about the joys of reading. You need to show an interest in reading and you can begin by reading the books that have excited you. It is important to remember that you should choose books that suit your child's interests and development level.

Choose books that have beautiful illustrations as children love the mixture of text and pictures. Graeme Base has beautiful books. Talk about the pictures and guess what see the book might be about. Children have to learn that the printed words have meaning. As you read to them they understand that what you are saying is reflected on the page you are looking at. Track underneath the words with your finger.

Model good reading behavior. Any form of reading material is valuable to capture your child's attention. When having breakfast, read the words on the cereal box. Clap out the number of syllables in the word.

There are many core skills and concepts that underlie reading, like word recognition, rhyming, starting and ending sounds of words, even joining in by looking at text. Have the kids help you prepare meals by reading recipes or instructions on packets and cans. When eating out or getting take out, find words and symbols that have meaning, like the golden arches of MacDonalds.

It doesn't matter if children are competent, independent readers still keep reading to them. Most people, especially children, love to have stories read to them. Try to vary what you read, for example, read poetry as well stories. Anything that builds imagination, love of words and language, love of reading is powerful.

Read to your children all the time. Read fiction and non-fiction; read poems and short stories. Read about real things- animals in Africa, Space travel - whatever interests you and your child. The advantage of reading to your child is that you can read books about things that interest them and stories that are beyond their reading level. This will motivate them to increase their reading skills so that they can read more complex text.

One really good tip for a long car journey is to have a CD with a story on it. Listening to great stories in the car is probably better than watching videos in a car. Take every opportunity for the family to read together. Turn the television off and read. Make reading an important part of your family life.

Vary the content of what you read to children. Read them a cleverly crafted poem and talk about the 'mental pictures' the poem creates. Select some of the most exciting words from the poem - the fun words or the mysterious words. Encourage your children to enjoy the intricacies and beauty of your language. Select from magazines, books, letters, emails, catalogs, mail from the mail box - anything. Words are magical. Reading is fun. If you believe this and if you spend lots of time helping your child read, your child will do brilliantly at school and love language and reading.

For coaching using these Secrets in your business, email oshanaben@yahoo.com.

The First Secret

Practice the Law of One.

The Law of One is the most ancient law in the world. It asks us to create only that which is for the highest good of everyone.

Let's use an example from the field of real estate. Let?s say that you are a real estate developer and you have just received a permit to develop a school in a neighborhood in which 50,000 people have lived for over 100 years. Building the school means that 5% of the population will have to relocate.

How will you handle this? Will you hold meetings with the residents who have to move and offer them several viable options? Will you provide generous compensation? Will you listen to their ideas and feelings about how the project is affecting them? Will you adopt green building practices? What does the 'highest good' mean to you and what does it mean to the residents who have to relocate?

Simply having the intention to act for the highest good of everyone opens many new avenues. Using this Law frees you from having to compromise or negotiate. The highest good becomes the next and most natural thing to do. Your actions then bring multiple benefits for everyone.

When you practice this Law with the groups you are working with, you create results beyond what you once thought was possible.

Actions

Hold Law of One Planning and Problem-Solving Sessions

Set aside an hour for a Law of One Planning and Problem-Solving Session with your partners or team. You may want to share a meal together or have quality social time together first. This helps you to relax and become more receptive to the new ideas that arise during the Session.

Use the Law of One whenever you want to generate the most expansive results and in situations in which you feel stuck.

This is how it works:

Sit facing your partner or if you are in a team, partner with another member. Have some paper and a pen at your side. One partner asks the following questions and the other partner takes notes and acts as the scribe.

The Law of One Process

1. What is the situation or action we want to take? 2. Who will benefit and/or who will be harmed? 3. Now sit in silence for 10-15 minutes together. 4. Share aloud your reflections and insights from sitting in silence. 5. Ask if what you want to do is for the highest good of everyone. 6. What are your next steps? 7. How and when will you take them?

When your intention is for the highest good of all, you naturally create solutions which benefit everyone.

The Second Secret

Set Aside Time to Think and Plan Together.

Many of my clients tell me that they are too busy to take time out of their busy day to vision and plan together. They think that it is a luxury. I remind them that it will shorten their workday and help them make much better decisions.

There are multiple benefits to this approach. It saves you time by cutting out the activities which do not support your most essential goals. It gives you time to think through and plan important conversations and the actions you will take. When you 'fine tune' what you do in this way you create laser-like precision which you can use in every aspect of your work.

Actions

When is the best time for you and your partner or team to vision and plan together? Some groups have morning meetings (which can be virtual) before they begin their work. This can be a short meeting which lasts only fifteen minutes or it can be longer.

The First Step

Talk with your partner or team about setting aside the best time for both of you to vision and plan. It is a good idea to have daily, weekly and monthly Visioning/Planning Sessions. Each of these serves a unique purpose and emphasizes different aspects of your work.

Daily Visioning/Planning Sessions

Here are a few ideas for daily sessions. Create them to fit your own management style and needs.

Share with your partner or team the activities you are planning to focus on that day. This includes asking questions and sharing problems that came up the day before.

If you do not have time to talk in-depth about these, set aside time during the week to do this.

Weekly Visioning/Planning Sessions

Weekly Visioning/Planning Sessions can be 1-2 hours in length. Set aside all of the time that you need. This will save you hours of work.

Have an agenda for the meeting. Allow enough time to discuss issues and ideas deeply.

Weekly Visioning/Planning Sessions often include discussing the status of projects, administrative issues, problems and new opportunities.

Monthly Visioning/Planning Sessions

Monthly Visioning/Planning Sessions are often 2-3 hours in length. If you like, experiment with having them outside of your place of business. This can free you to be more innovative and find fresh solutions which work.

Monthly Sessions are a good time to review your vision, status of projects, and quarterly and yearly goals and to update and revise your actions for the coming month and quarter.

I feel that it is good to review your purpose and vision monthly as you will have new insights every time you do this.

The Third Secret

Have a Method For Solving Issues As They Arise.

Practicing this Secret increases the possibility that your partnership or team will succeed. There are 2 processes I would like to share with you. One is for solving issues and the other is for sharing daily what you are thinking and feeling with your partner or team.

If you do not have a method for solving issues when they come up, your decisions will be influenced by the way you and your partner or members of your team are feeling that day. This can lead to actions you may regret. Why not use a method that works every time and leads to creating positive results which everyone can enjoy?

The Solving Issues Process is one method for solving issues as they arise. One of the most important aspects of this process is the way you listen to each other. When you listen free of judgment or opinion, your partner begins to share at deeper levels and arrives at their own answers easily.

Actions

The Solving Issues Process

Use this process when there is something you want to solve or you have an important decision to make. Here are a few examples of situations in which this Process can be helpful.

- You and your partner or members of your team disagree about what materials to use in developing a new product.

- You need to decide whether to accept or decline a new contract.

- You have an employee whose performance is affecting the productivity of his department.

In all of these situations, one partner states the following questions aloud and the other acts as the scribe and writes down the answers that you both share.

The key to the success of this Process is the way you and your partner listen. Listen to each other as if the other person is offering you the key to a room filled with gold. In this process, you do not respond in any way to what your partner is sharing.

Here is the Process.

1. What do we want to solve? 2. How do we each think and feel about it? 3. What is for the highest good? 4. Sit for 10 ? 15 minutes in silence. 4. Share your new reflections and insights. 5. What actions will we take? 6. How and when will we take them?

If you practice this method at least 5 times a week, you will find that within 90 days, you will regenerate your business in ways you could not have imagined before. Use it for issues and problems as well as new events and opportunities.

The Sharing What I Think and Feel Process

This process is for sharing what you are thinking and feeling daily. It requires no action from your partner except to listen and thank you for what have shared.

We all have conversations inside of us which we would never think of sharing. Often they are negative thoughts and feelings about another person or situation.

However, some of these can be shared constructively when they are shared and received without judgment.

I recommend using this Process as a part of every meeting. Here is how it works.

Your Partner: 'Is there anything you would like to share?'

You: 'Yes. I am feeling anxious because the engineering project is moving more slowly than anticipated.'

Your Partner: 'Thank you for sharing.'

Notice that what you shared is free from blame. You did not say "I am feeling anxious because you are working too slowly on the engineering project." You simply shared that you were anxious about the speed of the project.

When you want to discuss what your partner has shared with you, set aside a special time just for this. Continue to listen in a mode of discovery.

This Process enables you to release negativity in a healthy way. It frees you to be more creative and successful.

Tom and the Genie..A modern fable about work-life balance

Written by Oshana Himot on in: Reference & Education | Tags:
by Oshana Himot

This is the story of Tom, a CFO for a very large insurance company. He has been CFO for almost 30 years. He has a lovely wife named Mary and two daughters who are still in high school.

Tom's life is going well except that he is not happy. He has been working 60-hour weeks for 25 years and longs to do other things as well.

With the help of a modern-day genie named Vascar, he finds a path that creates more joy and balance in his life.

It is Saturday and Tom is hiking up his favorite mountain near his home in Vermont. It is September and leaves of every color of the rainbow are falling gently on the ground . As Tom reaches the top, he takes a deep breath of the cool, crisp air.

'Something needs to change. I am not happy working this hard anymore.'

Suddenly, he hears something rustling on the ground next to his feet. He looks down and to his fascination, he sees a genie.

The genie looks up at Tom. 'I am Vascar, a modern-day genie. Like my ancestors, I can grant you 3 wishes. Unlike my ancestors, I am also a life coach. This means that only after we work together on each of your 3 wishes will they be granted.

Tom could hardly speak. 'What will his wife Mary say when he tells her that he has been talking to a genie?'

Vascar spoke again.

'Tom, I can help you. Hold nothing back from yourself about what you truly desire and all of your wishes will be granted. Now, what is your first desire?

It did not take long for Tom to answer. 'I would like to have more time with my family. I have been working 60-hour weeks for nearly 25 years. My wife wants to have more time to enjoy life together and my two daughters will only be at home for a few more years. I want to get to know them more deeply and for them to know me as well. I would like this time with them to be something we will always remember.

He went on to his second desire without any prompting from Vascar.

'I would also like more time for my hobbies and other interests. You see, I have an avid interest in languages and would like to travel to exotic countries. I have only been out of the country twice and there are many more places I wish to explore.

Vascar responded. 'What is your third desire, Tom?'

'I would like to get to know my co-workers again. I have been juggling too many projects. I am managing a group that I no longer know - at least not the way I did when our company was still young. I feel that if we had more time to enjoy being together, our group will be happier and stay with the company much longer.?

Vascar smiled. 'In my father's day, he would have granted you these wishes and then disappeared. In the 21st Century, we do coaching first and then grant your wishes. You might say that coaching has become a modern kind of magic.

The sun is setting soon and it will be dark. Why don't you spend the night here and I will come back in the morning. We can work together then after you have had time to think through each of your 3 desires.

Tom nodded. 'I will do it.'

The genie disappeared. Tom sat for a very long time. Just before the sun was ready to set, he reached into his backpack for his sleeping bag and warm clothes. The stars were bright and he remembered all of the times he had taken his wife Mary and the girls camping.

Tom began to work with each of his 3 desires. It was very easy to think clearly under the stars.

More Time with My Family

He realized how preoccupied he had been even when he was at home with his family. He often chose to work instead of spend time with them.

"Why not take everyone to Hawaii? I've saved up two extra weeks of my vacation time."

He realized that he wanted to do much more than that - this was simply a way to begin.

More Time to Study Languages and Travel

Tom thought for a moment. "To study and travel, I need more time than I have now.

What are my choices?

I can talk with Fred, our CEO. We haven?t talked informally for awhile. What is he thinking right now? Does he want to downsize? Are there obsolete projects we can eliminate? Is there someone in my department that I can delegate some of my projects to? How open will Fred be when I tell him that I want to work 40 hours a week instead of 60? Will he understand?

What if he says "no" to my desire for more balance? What will I do then?? Tom looked up at the night sky. "I know there is a way?.." More Quality Time With My Staff

Tom began to think about how he could have more quality time with his group once again.

"In the early days, we were such a fun company. We had picnics, baseball games, birthday parties.we were all one big family. I could not wait to get to work each morning.

When we grew, much of the spontaneity... the laughter, fun, comraderie... melted away and everyone became serious about their work.

I will talk with Fred about having picnics and other events together. I know this will help us in many ways. And, I will enjoy getting to know my group again."

Tom feel asleep with a big smile on his face. It felt wonderful thinking about all the new opportunities coming into his life.

The gentle warmth of the morning sun on his face woke him up.

As he was dressing, Vascar came to greet him.

He spoke. "I see you have given much thought to each of your 3 desires. Let me put my coaching hat on so that we can talk about each of them."

Tom began by sharing some of his insights from last night.

Vascar spoke. "Let's talk about your family first. How do you feel about sharing openly your insights about being preoccupied in the past and now wanting to be more available to them?"

Tom said that he wanted to do this and would share this when he returned home.

The genie nodded and went on to talk about Tom's desire to work fewer hours and explore his interest in studying languages and traveling more.

"What fears, if any, do you have about talking with Fred?"

Tom answered. "Fred can be conservative and cautious. I thought about this last night and asked myself what I would do if he feels that he needs a CFO who puts in 60-hour weeks.

I decided that I would offer to share my job with someone equally as qualified as I am - or find a position in another company which enables me to have more time."

"How do you feel about this?"

"It is never easy to leave a place that has been my ?home? for so long. Yet, I am willing to risk the possibility that he will say no."

Vascar responded. "Your courage is noble. It could be a good idea to think through all of Fred's concerns and all possible solutions. When you talk with him, you may want to let him know that you would like to find a solution that is beneficial for the company too."

Tom nodded in agreement.

He went on to Tom's 3rd desire. "Besides spending more time with your staff, how have you shown them that you appreciate them?"

Tom thought for a moment. "It has been awhile since I have acknowledged them for their loyalty, dedication and hard work. In addition to the fun things we will be doing together, I will come up with some ways to show my appreciation now. Thanks for the idea."

Vascar replied. "You are most welcome."

Vascar Grants Tom His Three Wishes

It took Tom only a month to make all 3 of these positive changes in his life. His conversations with Fred went so well that Fred decided to make major changes in his company so that he, too, could work a 40-your week. He let go of many projects which were not serving his clients any more.

"It's a miracle", thought Tom. And then he remembered Vascar.

"In three weeks, I will be on a plane to Hawaii with Mary and the girls. My hours at work now give me time to start planning some of the trips I want to take and we have eliminated many stressful projects at work and the staff is smiling and happy again.

Tonight I am taking the girls to a football game. I am filled with joy."

A History of Distance Education

Written by Steve Collins on in: Reference & Education | Tags:
by Steve Collins

Distance education is becoming a fashionable way to learn in today's educational environment. While it is still growing in popularity, it has been around for some time. It may not have been as advanced as it is now, but it has enjoyed a long history. The history of distance education is a long and storied one. Some of the greatest minds on the planet like Thomas Edison have been involved in its development.

What are the benefits of distance education? There are advantages for both the educational institution and for the student. The students get the advantage of flexibility. They can stay home and not have to pay for the gas and time that it takes to travel to school. They can enjoy the expediency of working school around their schedule instead of the other way around. For the institution, it can enjoy a broader base of students. They can also reach students ordinarily too busy to attend conventional classes.

The earliest instances of distance education can be traced to the 1700s with the creation of primitive correspondence educations. The distance learning movement took on a new head of steam in the early 1900s. It was then that film projection was introduced into particular classrooms. While it wasn't as cost-effective as administrators had hoped, it still marked an early effort to to bring the moving image into the classroom.

Shortly after that radio was experimented with, but this too proved a bit unwieldy. The invention of television made it possible to broadcast learning programs anywhere in the world. This clearly broadened the horizons of distance learners. They could learn about any topic under the sun as long as they had access to a television. The possibilities of television brought with it several big sponsors in the educational movement.

The Internet has transformed distance learning yet again. From the comfort of your home, you can log on and watch a lecture, read a book or correspond instantly. It has literally brought the classroom to your home. Many universities and colleges offer entire degree programs online. This means you never have to set foot on a university to get a great degree. Overall, the quality of the education has been found to be equal to traditional universities and the convenience it offers is unparalleled. If you have been considering obtaining a degree, distance learning may be the way to go. Many universities and colleges offer superb distance learning, like the prestigious Ashworth College.
