What Prevents Most People From Having More Than An Average Life?

Computers & Technology No Comments »
by Scott Edwards

This is hardly a new thing to ask; it's a question that's been around for as long as people have existed. Some of the best thinkers over the centuries have looked at the factors that hold us back - the part of human nature that limits our achievements in life.

It's an instinctive safety mechanism. It's been called many things over the years - but basically it's what we all know as fear. You'll be familiar with the 'fight or flight' reaction, a vital tool for the early man. At its most basic level, it's what makes us instantly react when someone jumps out at us!

Everybody has a comfort zone, and we like to live our lives within that zone. When we step out of it, we quickly get an adrenaline rush that equips us to fight or run away. Our natural reaction is to run and get back into our comfort zone immediately. We log what happened mentally as it was very uncomfortable and our brain remembers not to repeat that experience again.

But as we don't have to worry about being eaten by sabre tooth tigers these days, most fear is imaginary. F.E.A.R = False Evidence Appearing Real. We're brilliant at imagining the worst that could happen, even though 99.99% of the time it never does. On the other hand, we spend very little time imagining the best that could happen, yet evidence suggests that the few who do visualise their success are much more likely to achieve it.

Society has been encouraging fear for years. Ruling leaders, both political and religious, have used fear as a tool to keep control over the ages, keeping society in line. When you were little, your mum probably used it on more than one occasion! The truth is, we have a choice - between feeling the fear and do it anyway, or whimpering back and staying average.

Any improvement you want to make will involve change. If you want to change some things in your life you have to change some things in your life - that sounds like a riddle, but in fact it just means no problem can be solved at the same level of thinking that caused it.

Anything big enough to make a worthwhile change will inevitably involve doing something different and taking you out of your comfort zone, so it stands to reason you'll feel uncomfortable about the action needed. People who stay average resist change because 'it didn't feel right'. People who move on know they'll feel uncomfortable but push through the feeling and do it anyway.

By making small changes that are outside your comfort zone, that zone gradually gets larger as you start to build up your confidence. Make a list of the positives and negatives of anything you do - looking objectively at something helps you to break down your fear.

Don't let your fears and doubts deny you the good things in life. William Shakespeare said, "Our doubts are traitors, and make us lose the good we oft might win, by fearing to attempt.

How to Protect MS Office Documents

Computers & Technology No Comments »
by Leo Tenskyville

When you are saving a document, do you stop to think about what type of information it contains, or what could happen should it fall into the wrong hands? Few people do, as they think that the information on their computer is safe. Unfortunately with the Internet it is fairly easy for anyone out there to access your computer and download any data that may be of use to them.

For starters, you will want to keep your entire computer protected from those who would try to get into it. If someone stole your PC or laptop, what would the consequences be? Besides having access to your personal information they could also obtain sensitive work documents or personal information about your clients.

If you have MS Office 2007 it is simple to password protect any document you have by doing the following:

In the top left-hand corner select the Office Button Mouse over Prepare, then choose Encrypt Document Type in your password and click Save

MS Office 2007 makes it very simple to password protect your documents through a few simple steps:

With the document open, go to File | Save As At the very top of the Save As screen select Tools | General Options There will be presented with a Save Options screen Enter your password to open / password to modify or both and click OK You will be prompted to re-enter your password(s), click OK when done Then just Save the file

Earlier versions of MS Office also have password protection available in the Save As screen under the Tools | Options selection. Your passwords should be easy enough to remember by not easy to guess by someone else.

Finally you need to ensure that should your hard drive malfunction or get erased by a power surge that you don't lose all the files that you have worked so hard to protect. Backing up your files gives you a second chance at the files you need if something happens to your computer.

There are a few simple ways that you can back up your files, depending on whether you want to be responsible for the files or if you want to keep them off site. Here are a few options:

1) On CD-ROM: Make use of your CD-ROM drive by using it to make a duplicate of your files on a regular basis. Keep the CD safe, somewhere no one can find it and away from your computer should there be a fire. You will have to set up a reminder for yourself to copy the files regularly.

2) USB Flash Drive: Small, compact and easy to use, these portable drives are perfect for keeping files safe, as long as you dont lose it. Password protect the drive just in case, and keep track of it at all times.

3) Online Storage: This is a sure fire way to keep your documents protected while at the same time making sure that you can access them from anywhere in the world. This is definitely handy if you happen to travel for business, as you dont have to worry about bungling that big presentation if your laptop goes missing, simply log on and retrieve the file. You can set up your computer to automatically synch with the online service so you never have to worry about files being out of date when you need them.

Best remote access software

Computers & Technology No Comments »
by Elizabeth Cunningham

Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) is a common method of remote access from branch offices since it combines dial-up with faster data rates. wireless, cable modem, and Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) technologies offer other possibilities for remote access.

With over 1500 titles, there were more third party utilities written for RA than for any other shareware BBS software. While RA was initially shareware, Andrew also released a commercial edition - "RemoteAccess Professional" - that was bundled with utilities to allow remote control of nodes over a network (RANETMGR, and RATSR).

File access is intended to allow you to access your files from a remote location using the Internet, while remote control of the desktop brings the entire desktop of your home computer over to the computer you are currently using, allowing you to use your home computer as if you were currently sitting in front of it. At least, that's the idea anyway.

RemoteAccess was never ported to a 32-bit version, but there were two clones of RA in the later years which did include 32-bit versions: EleBBS in the late 1990s which included DOS, Windows, OS/2 and Linux flavors., and MBSE, a few years later, which focused mainly on the Linux operating system.

GoToMyPC is Web-based remote access software. Unlike other products in this space, GoToMyPC requires setup only of those computers needing to receive incoming remote access requests. After registering those computers, remote connections are initiated via your Web browser. GoToMyPC strives to be more firewall-friendly than other products through its use of Web protocols.

A method to access your work computer or company network from a remote location or computer. Remote access can be possible using dial-up access, Broadband access or wireless access. Laptop computers, PDAs and Smartphones can be used to take advantage of remote access. Remote access solutions can be Internet-based or a software program.

Development and tuning of remote access software has been ongoing for many years, and arguably the most well known (free) implementation of this is VNC , or Virtual Network Computing. VNC is a free multi-platform remote control package which enables you to view and interact with a remote computer. It will run on most known operating systems and requires very little computing power.

Web Hosting and its Benefits

Internet & Online Business No Comments »
by Gregg Phillips

Web hosting is all about making a web page available through the World Wide Web, with an internet connection, for anyone across the world to access. As it is become a necessary need in today's world, these services are offered for free under many circumstances. These services are offered for free as well as for paid situations.

There are several types of web hosting, as each individual's requirements will vary. There is the free web hosting, where the user gets to host the web page absolutely free of cost. These companies will be powered through advertisements. Most of the free hosting services will go to the personal web pages as they may not need too much data base support.

This will be done to make the utilization of the resources much better. Then there is the managed web hosting. This will allow an individual to host his own web page, but he will not be given total control of the server. The users will not be allowed to modify this, as they may change the configuration settings. In this case the server will be leased to the client and they will not be allowed to own it.

The opposite of this is the dedicated web hosting. With this, the user will be given complete control of the server, and he will be responsible for the management of the web page. Most people who know what they need to know about web hosting, will go in for this option. The virtual dedicated web hosting is very interesting.

In this, the users are allowed use a server, where they will feel that they are using their own servers, but they will be sharing the servers with others. They will unable to access virtual space when they use this type of web hosting. The reseller web hosting is for those who want to host the web pages themselves. The accounts of these will vary in size, and they will also function for individual names.

The most expensive web hosting is the collocation type. The physical space will be provided by the hosting company, and the users will own the colo servers. Only certain facilities will be provided for the user with this hosting like the Internet, and storage. As with all services, these web hosting types can be researched before picking the right one.

Web Design; Professional Or Bust

Internet & Online Business No Comments »
by Stephen Grisham, Sr.

Imagine your first web designer experience. More than likely you will be looking at a younger adult, maybe twenty-one. He has an irritating smirk, an untucked shirt, and a pair of ripped jeans with flashy, multicolored shoes. Are you really ready to introduce a kid into your professional atmosphere?

This is not the image you expect to see in your website's designer. These kids more than likely have a weak portfolio; which if you can manage to help them and get your site for free, that is great, but otherwise you should always be looking for a profession web designer.

This choice is something that you will be spending a massive chunk of time on. If you want to save some of this time you need to be able to relate with a web designer. So before you go in and sign an inexperienced designer to a contract, look around for designers with more experience and the highest education in the field.

Your best bet is to schedule multiple meetings with web designers. Do not bring your office-tone standards to the interview, as web designing does not require a suit and spiffy shiny shoes. Instead, keep in mind that the person across from you is a human being despite their not business-esque personality and that they need to be ready for the task at hand.

One great way to get yourself involved with the design is to spend some time getting to know the different web design languages. With a solid or remotely solid base of understanding you can communicate smoothly with the designer to get exactly what you want. This will ultimately save you time and money

Make your own portfolio. Bring anything you can to show colors, fonts, logos, and any other aesthetic component you can think of for your page. Have in mind a list of features - for example, do you need a search engine? Do you need online shopping? Do you need to take credit cards online?

Once your own smaller portfolio is created give it to the designer. Keeping one for yourself and handing one out to each individual candidate is a great way to get the best results - as often times you can have them create a simple model with your information so you can judge their work. Then you know how much you will have to pay for what quality of work.

Lastly, you need to make sure your designer offers maintenance care. It may not sound important at first, but keeping your site up to date is just as important as creating it. No matter if it is the same designer or by the company they work for, it is an essential piece to a successful site. Normally it is not free but it will benefit you greatly. If you spend the time to prepare for a web designer and creating your own website, you will not only save your time but also your money.
