The variety of MP3 player accessories available these days is huge-and growing every day. In fact, for just about any situation you can think of where you might use your MP3 player, someone has come up with a unique piece of equipment that will help you get the most from your MP3 files, whether they are music or video. Both online and at your favorite local electronics source are some of the creative MP3 player accessories that are available.

Cases and other Carriers for your MP3

What's one of the best things about MP3 players? Portability, of course! One of the most-used MP3 player accessories for many people is a good, sturdy, great-looking case. Or, if you're a jogger, biker, or skateboarder, maybe what you're looking for is an armband, so you can take your tunes with you while you're on the go. Another popular option are clips and backpack straps. You can expect to pay from $9.99 for some of the least expensive cases, up to $29.99 or more for the higher-end sport armbands or other carriers.

Speakers

But enjoying your MP3 player isn't always about portability, right? Allowing you to get that concert-hall sound right in your living room are lots of great speaker solutions. Often, these speaker docks will have built-in chargers for your player, and some feature built-in FM radios receivers and other features as well. Many of the most respected names in sound equipment offer speakers for your MP3 player that allow you to listen to your music with impressive depth and volume of sound. Depending on the features you need, prices can run from the high $20s to $250 and more.

Car connections

One of the most creative MP3 player accessories on the market today is a device that allows you to listen to your MP3 files through your car's stereo system. At the factory, in fact, some auto manufacturers have begun installing MP3 inputs. But even if your ride didn't come with a built-in MP3 jack, don't despair?plenty of vendors have what you need to hear your favorite music (or watch your video files with sound from your car's audio system) while you're cruising down the road. Many of the most popular MP3 player accessories for car use is the FM receiver in your car system to play files through the stereo. Many of these devices, in fact, are wireless?just plug them into the appropriate input on your MP3 player, tune them to the proper FM band, and you're all set!

Other Cool Stuff

The above list is nowhere near exhaustive. Other MP3 player accessories that can enhance your enjoyment of your system include headphones and ear buds, FM-capture devices that allow you to convert FM radio to MP3 files, universal docks, headphone splitters to permit multiple users to connect headphones to the same MP3 player... and lots more!

Introducing the Nintendo DSi

Written by Chris Hagen on in: Computers & Technology | Tags:
by Chris Hagen

Rumors of a new version of the popular Nintendo DS system have been confirmed. Nintendo's newest addition to the DS family, the DSi, is slated to hit Japanese markets in November and American markets in 2009.

Nintendo's DS was originally released to eager gamers in 2004. The hugely popular system introduced an intuitive touchscreen, a built-in microphone, and a wide range of titles for almost every genre. In 2006, Nintendo released the DS Lite, a sleeker repackaging of the original DS.

But is the DSi just another rehash of the DS Lite?

The answer is, thankfully, no. Although the DS Lite did present gamers with a fancy new case and packaging, the product itself did not do much, component-wise, to really stand apart from its predecessor. With the DSi, however, Nintendo has already solidified several key changes and additions that will certainly separate it from the previous DS systems.

Cosmetically, Nintendo has made some slight modifications. Like the DS Lite, the DSi will have some slight physical changes to the design, including bigger screens (3.25 inches) and matte colors for the casing (versus the glossy DS Lite).

The DSi will also be slimmer than the DS Lite (2.6mm thinner to be exact), but that reduction in size comes at a cost- no backwards compatibility. Unlike the DS and DS Lite, the DSi will not be able to play Game Boy Advance games.

Perhaps the biggest cosmetic addition to the system are the two built-in cameras. There will be an external camera and a VGA camera, which will be located in the hinge. Users will be able to edit the 640x480 pictures using the touchscreen capability.

The most exciting addition to the DSi is the addition of an SD-card slot, as well as on-board memory. DSi owners will be able to listen to music with full playback functionality (although only through AAC formatted files; MP3 files are not supported). This, along with the built-in camera, will expand the uses of the DSi as a multimedia device.

The DSi will include a Nintendo DS web browser, and the ability to download games using Nintendo points. Users will be able to purchase Points and use them to buy games offered through Nintendo's DS Wares.

The DSi is certainly chock full of new features and gadgets, making gamers and technophiles alike giddy in anticipation, myself included. Nintendo has done a terrific job garnering attention and excitement regarding the release of the new system, but will it surpass the DS Lite? I guess we'll have to wait to find out.

How Small Business can Acheive Mobility

Written by Christopher Fitch on in: Computers & Technology | Tags:

Most entrepreneurs and small business owners will agree: one of the biggest challenges they face is the one of mobility. The advanced technology of smart phones helps with this matter as business owners can now receive e-mail on their phone and deal with them accordingly.

The last obstacle to true mobility really comes down to something to effect of: "how do I deal with what happens back at the office?" Or, more specifically, how to manage faxes, voicemail, and important calls coming in from the toll-free number while out in the field.

Just about anything these days seems capable of being handled digitally by technology that has become rather inexpensive. This is where small business owners and entrepreneurs will gain the most. Using such technology advantageously, astute business owners and entrepreneurs can not only achieve true mobility, but can project an image that matches that of the Fortune 500. And how about the added bonus of saving on overall operating expenses?

Ingeniously, this technology works by essentially having your customers call into a computer. This computer answers the calls or accepts faxes and, in digital format, forwards them to you. You can receive forwarded calls, voicemails, faxes anywhere -- your mobile phone, your smart phone, your e-mail inbox. This means you can be at the spa or golf course while reviewing pages of a sales contract or taking calls from your toll-free number while sitting on the train.

The best provider in our opinion is a well-known company called RingCentral. What impresses us most about RingCentral is that this lone company can handle multiple back-end functions (phone, fax, virtual reception, etc.) as well as launch your small business's image into the big leagues. And since image plays such a large role these days, RingCentral is a company you will want to do business with. Here are some of the tangible solutions they can provide.

Toll Free Number. While this feature is more important for companies whose reach crosses area codes (e.g. consultants, sales & support businesses, etc.), a toll-free number immediately gives the impression of a "large" company. Toll-Free numbers can be arranged through RingCentral, including vanity numbers at a marginally higher cost.

Virtual Receptionist with music while callers are on "hold" and voicemail. Call any large company and you will probably hear music before your call gets patched through to the right party. Now you can offer this same feature even if you area one-person business. While features like this might incur additional charges with some providers, they are free with RingCentral.

Call Queues. Suppose you are on the phone at the country club when another call arrives. With a call queue, your new caller waits on hold while you finish your existing call. This helps you reduce lost sale calls that might have historically gone straight to voicemail or, worse, the competition! Again, another free feature.

Internet Fax. Send and receive faxes online or by e-mail. This feature alone allows a tremendous amount of freedom from the office, and it also eliminates courier costs. Another Free feature.

The list continues almost indefinitely. The largest disappointment with RingCentral is that some of its features (not mentioned here, such as DigitalLine which provides Voice Over Internet or VOIP) cost extra. Now, for many small businesses and entrepreneurs, most of these extras are unnecessary, and for the more established entrepreneur these costs are likely irrelevant given their tangible benefits.

Whether you sign up with RingCentral or someone else, the most common reason for using a service like this comes back to the issue of mobility. A secondary justification would be the cost-effectiveness of the system; at $24.99, you can't get this type of service through your phone company, let alone purchase the necessary hardware and software to do it yourself.

Advanced Mezzanine (Advanced MC) Cards augment the existing and continued implementation of Advanced Telecommunications Computing Architecture (ATCA). Their "hot swap-ability" quality has the ability to considerably reduce operating costs by providing carriers with the ability to upgrade and service working systems with negligible disruption to overall operations. The great strength of the AMC module is the insistence that telecommunications should be the main focus of technological development. Advanced MC cards enhance the salient features of ATCA platforms, including higher bandwidth, hot swap-ability, integrated system management, and higher power capabilities.

Advanced MC Cards meet the PCI Industrial Computer Manufacturers Group's model for hot-swap-ability and field-replaceable mezzanine cards. The specific cards are the PICMG AMC.0 , AMC.1, AMC.2, AMC.3, and AMC.4. Kontron Processor AMCs are compliant with PICMG's AMC.x specifications, and are capable of powerful performance and data throughput. Kontron's board and mezzanine products provide designers with a commercial, flexible off-the-shelf solutions.

Kontron produces SAS and SATA based storage modules, I/O AMC modules, and MCH Carrier Hubs. The MCH hubs are the central management and data toggling devices in the popular MicroTCA systems. Kontron's MCH hubs are also integrated into open platforms. Recently, Kontron added the AM4011 as part of the company's expanding portfolio of Advanced MC cards. The versatile Kontron AM4011 is useful as a main controller, data server, or traffic or media processor. The MicroTCA platforms are often used in military, law enforcement, transportation, avionics, carrier-grade telecommunications, and video processing applications.

Advanced MC cards are fundamental. Earlier this year, Kontron's OM6062 was conferred the "Editors Choice" award by the staff at EG3.com, a leading technology website. "The Kontron OM6062 represents another example of Kontron's commitment to the rapidly growing MicroTCA and Advanced MC cards market where meeting the demands for faster time-to-market and leading-edge technology have become a necessity," said David Pursley, an Applications Engineer at Kontron.

Founded in 1962, world market leader Kontron pioneers and manufactures embedded computer systems across the first world. It has offices in Germany, Quebec, the United States, and Taiwan. Kontron is listed on the German stock exchange under the symbol "KBC" (TecDAX 30) and is a Premier Member with the Intel Communications Alliance. It remains one of the world's most acclaimed suppliers of Advanced Mezzanine Card technology.

COM Express Motherboards

A motherboard is the central printed circuit board that makes up a intricate electronic system, specifically a personal computer or a laptop. It can also be referred to as a mainboard, a system board, a baseboard, a planar board, even a mobo, depending on whom you are speaking to. With Apple computer systems, for instance, the motherboard is often labeled a logic board.

IBM-compatible computers hold over 95% of the personal computer market today and most motherboards are produced particularly to meet their demand. This fundamental piece of equipment provides all of the electrical connections that the other parts of your system will communicate with, all the while holding the central processing unit as well as other peripheral interfaces. The motherboard holds crucial components such as the main internal memory, microprocessor, and even the real-time clock.

Prior to the 1980s, a typical computer was usually designed with a card-cage case or mainframe with all of the components linking to a backplane, which housed a set of slots connected by wires. The central processing unit, memory, and peripherals were located on separate circuit boards that plugged into the backplane. As the microprocessor became more common in the 1990s, it was more inexpensive to integrate many peripherals into the motherboard and include Super I/O (Input/Output) chips in order to operate the keyboard and mouse.

Consumers today are more knowledgeable. Many dabble with their own systems, upgrading or completing entire units on their own. Whether you are a beginner or an educated computer systems engineer, there are manyplaces to find exactly what it is you are looking for when it comes to the necessary parts and peripherals. The Internet is a great place to browse manufacturer's websites as well as read any reviews on new and upcoming models of motherboards or components that you may be looking for.

COM Express is one of the more powerful motherboards available on the market. Kontron Embedded Modules is a founding member of the ETX Industrial Group (ETX-IG) and carries a number of revolutionary products that offer compact 'nano' and 'micro' Com Express compatible modules. In order to purchase your own COM Express motherboard, you can either contact the manufactuer directly or visit their website.
