A Guide to Creating an Indoor Greenhouse

Landscaping-Outdoor-Decorating No Comments »

by Shelley Lindt

Do you love to garden but your living arrangements just aren't suited to it? Why not consider an indoor greenhouse. If your home is an apartment, the benefits of an indoor greenhouse are quite apparent. But even homeowners with large yards are attracted to the idea of an indoor greenhouse.

A real benefit is the lower expense involved. Even a simple lean-to greenhouse shed is more costly to build than a small indoor unit. It's not that difficult to build a greenhouse in your own home with supplies that are readily available at any home improvement outlet.

Or maybe you want an indoor greenhouse, but aren't interested in building one from scratch. Well, you're in luck, because you can buy an indoor greenhouse kit. You can get these in various styles and brand names. You can get them at a department store, a garden center, or an online retailer.

Indoor greenhouse kits range from a tiny herb garden that you can keep on your countertop to a kit capable of turning your basement's shelving unit into a hothouse.

If you don't find this idea suitable, you can build your own greenhouse on the cheap. Begin by building a freestanding set of shelves, about 4 shelves in total. You will need to attach it securely to the floor.

Next, there needs to be a way to retain the moisture and heat that you have provided. This can be accomplished by using sheets of plastic or an old shower curtain to cover the shelves, and sealing them with duct tape. You can provide heat by purchasing heating pads and placing them at the bottom of the greenhouse. Make sure you buy a thermometer so you can measure the temperature regularly.

Place a cup of water in your greenhouse to provide the humidity your plants need. For their lighting needs, you can use a basic fluorescent lamp. But you should really consider purchasing a specially designed grow light that will help your plants thrive. A basic unit is relatively inexpensive.

Next you need some soil-filled containers to set your plants in. Set them on the shelving unit and give them a drink of water. Now sit back and admire your do-it-yourself greenhouse that does the job just as well as a kit.

Use these suggestions as a guideline, and throw in some imagination and style. By doing so, there's no doubt you can buy or build an indoor greenhouse that will suit your needs perfectly.

Are You Up for the Challenge of a Fish Pond?

Landscaping-Outdoor-Decorating No Comments »
by Sam Katz

If you're looking to make a statement with your landscaping, a fish pond is the answer. If you're fortunate enough to have a large backyard, the addition of a pond can only enhance its appearance. However, installing a pond means a real commitment of both your energy and time. First you'll select a location, construct the fish pond, then provide it with ongoing maintenance so it will add beauty to your property.

Putting in a fish pond will make a big change to the look of your property, so take your time in choosing a location. Remember that once you install it, it's permanent, unless you're prepared to pay a lot of money to fix it. You'll want to place your fish pond where there's sufficient room for both the pond itself and the surrounding vegetation that will enhance it.

Keep in mind that you should never locate a pond under a tree. Trees are constantly dropping leaves. And if they land in your pond, it will mean more work for you to clean them out. If you don't, the plants and fish in your pond will certainly suffer. You also need to locate the pond in an area where it will receive direct sunlight, which is essential to the health of both the fish and the plants.

Apart from the location, your next step is to determine the size and shape of pond that is best suited to your property and the overall effect you are trying to achieve. Consider the type of fish and water plants that you want to feature. For example, if you're building a koi fish pond, it will need to be much larger than one that contains goldfish. You can choose from a variety of shapes in a hard shell pond liner, including round, square, oval, rectangular and kidney shaped. Or you can go with flexible pond liners that let you decide the shape.

Next, consider the maintenance requirements of your pond. Of course you want it to look beautiful each and every day. But your real concern should be the proper care of the fish and plants in the pond. Regular feeding of the fish and cleaning of the pond are essential. Make sure you read up on how to properly care for whatever type of fish you choose to stock, and also the requirements of any water plants in the pond.

Planning and building a fish pond involves a lot of time and effort, and so does its maintenance. That's why it's important that you are very sure about the commitment before you go ahead. But if you're prepared to put in the effort required, you're sure to be rewarded with a landscaping feature that will bring much enjoyment to your life.

Looking for an Outdoor Structure

Landscaping-Outdoor-Decorating No Comments »
by Heath Rossomme

It's amazing how many great garden and outdoor structures are available these days. When you have these kinds of choices, it's hard to decide what will look best in your yard. Sometimes the best way to go about deciding is to look at your family activity and see which one fits the best.

Let's start with the trellis. You will find trellises in both the front and back yards in gardens of all kinds and against large and small walls and buildings to help tame the mass of climbing vines. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes and you can use them virtually any and everywhere.

If you're looking to get more bang for your buck, try an arbor. They're very popular in gardens and can be used to create stand alone focal points in your yard. Using arbors with trellised sides can be a wonderful way of utilizing the climbing vines that will fill in the sides and top thus creating an elegant canopy throughout the arch that is just lovely.

A larger structure that can be a stand alone or combined with your porch or patio is a pergola. Pergolas are unique in that they have the same canopy capabilities as arbors with the right plant choices but they also provide shade in the mornings and evenings due to the slatted nature of the roof. Creating a sitting area under a pergola is a great way to enjoy one of these fine structures and some pergolas came with optional chairs and/or tables built in.

One of the largest outdoor structures that are really fun is the gazebo. Gazebos are natural gathering places and can be used anywhere in the yard where you want people to be able to congregate and have a good time. They can be easily used beside a swimming pool or out in the yard all by itself. They are beautiful and always ready for a party or private dinner and are very versatile.

A couple of other structures that get overlooked at times are raised beds and bridges. Raised beds can be used to create stand alone flowerbeds anywhere in the yard. There is no digging required and they're easy to put together and use. Bridges are for those special places that have a water feature or low spot in the yard. They can really make an uninteresting landscape interesting.

Caring for Biennials, Perennials And Annuals

Landscaping-Outdoor-Decorating No Comments »
by Thomas Fryd

Biennials are very lovely plants and have some beautiful flowers. They are a bit of trouble for a gardener, since the continue growing during their first year and do not bloom fully until the second year. The great advantage of biennials is that their seeding stage makes new plants which will bloom again in two years time. This makes it unneeded to add additional seeds.

Biennials are best when planted during the early summer and then transplanted into rich soil when they are larger. It is also a good to transfer pots at this time, especially in areas where they cannot be left outside during the winter time. In some instances, they can be transferred to a coldframe and then put into a flower bed the following spring.

You need to use careful soil preparation when planting biennials and annuals. Once you are done planting, if you desire continued plant growth, it is best not to over work the plants with too much weeding or cultivation. If you plant a fastidious biennial patch, then you will need to replace the plants yearly.

Perennials are the staple of the most basic flower gardens. Every year they will die and come back for the next season. They are hearty and last for a long time.

Historically, perennials are some of the oldest plants around. Perennials have been planted for many centuries and as a result of breeding and crossbreeding, they bear no resemblance to the wide varieties. In some types of perennials, the blossoms have become specialized so much throughout the centuries, that they do not produce seeds. Other types of perennials are being developed by novice botanists and gardening enthusiasts. Through cultivation and crossbreeding, perennials are not as hardy as other kinds of flowers. Certain perennials die after flowering and this will leave open spaces in your garden, many people consider this as a drawback.

You can solve the problem of short flowering time spans and the rather unsightly spaces they leave behind. One of the popular garden designs is to intersperse perennials with potted plants and a mixture of annuals and other bulbs and flowering plants. Those that will bloom opposite the time period that your perennials do.

There are some perennials that are easily transplanted, for example, chrysanthemums. You can move them from one place to another and they have no noticeable ill after effects. This is another great way to keep your garden colorful and blooming all year round.
