Growing concern of the safety of food has led many savvy dog owners to begin to make their own dog food also known as holistic dog food which is actually quite simple to make. It actually can save the owner money and give your dog a more nutritious balanced diet.

They key to a healthy dog diet is to have approximately 70% carbohydrates, 25% meat, and 5% vegetables and other additions. A combination of meats and vegetables is necessary for these omnivores. Certain additions such as certain flours, bonemeal, and garlic can help the dog's health and diet even more so.

The base of the dog's diet are the carbohydrates and can come from many sources. Whole wheat flour, cornmeal, oats, soy flour and barley as well as white and brown rice are major base carbohydrates that can be used in the making of the dog food.

Meats are the next component of Holistic Dog Food. Try to choose healthy, quality proteins like lean chicken, fish, beef, or even egg whites. Many dog owners who make their own Holistic Dog Food find that grinding the meat makes the process much easier.

To ensure your dog receives all the nutrients he needs, many other foods can be added to dog food. Vegetables like carrots, potatoes, celery, corn, and spinach are all healthy additions. Dog owners who want to make organic dog food should check to see what organic options for produce are available. It is always a good idea to grind the vegetables to aid in your dog's digestion process. Small amounts of garlic are also a good option because it can help keep fleas away. Bonemeal or dehydrated milk can be added as a calcium boost.

When you are ready to make your dog's food, simply combine the components together with a bit of water and cook until the meat or protein is cooked throughout. A simple homemade dog food recipe would be to combine one cup of cornmeal, about one-fourth of a cup of ground chicken, a tablespoon full of ground carrots, and a sprinkling of bonemeal. Place in a saucepan with a half cup of water, and simmer until the chicken is cooked. Most dog food recipes can be kept in the refrigerator for two days

Certain foods must be avoided when making dog food such as chocolate or caffeine bearing products since it is known to cause seizures in dogs. Grapes, raisins, avocados, and onions should not be included in the food either. Avoid spices since some dogs can be sensitive to them as well.

Making your own dog food is the best way to monitor what foods are part of your dog's diet. A balanced, nutritional diet can definitely have an impact on a dog's energy level, weight, and lifespan. Of course, you should ask your veterinarian if any special considerations are necessary when making the dog food. Overall, this is a great way to save money and, more importantly, keep your dog healthy for years to come.

Healthy Food Keeps Your Pup In Top Condition

Plenty of advice on how to provide your dog with a healthy diet is found in the dog food ads and on the cans and packages. Your vet, family, friends and neighbors will add their own advice. Let's go to the basics and see if we can't come up with some great home cooking ideas for your pet.

When purchasing a dog food product off the shelf look for a 50-40-10 ratio of meat, vegetable, and grain. This is optimum and provides your dog with a healthy balance of needed nutrients. The meat should be listed first with beef, chicken or lamb as the typical meat ingredient. Don't cut corners by buying a cheap brand. You're not doing your best friend any favor. Go after quality and Fido will thank you.

Many pet owners, concerned over the types of preservatives used in some dog food are resolving the issue by cooking their own pet food. Preservatives such as BHA, BHT, and oxyquin are believed to be toxic an large amounts. The problem is, how much is large and is the effect these preservatives may have on your best friend cumulative over time?

The Internet is a good source for dog food recipes but you'll find both good and not-so-good recipes. If you follow the 50-40-10 ratio described above you should be OK. Make sure the meat is cooked well and free of bones. The best choice for grain is usually considered to be brown rice or cooked oatmeal.

Once you know the basic ratios, you can experiment until you find a combination of ingredients that your dog will love. Remember not to salt the food, and that some ingredients - chocolate, garlic, onions, avocados, grapes, raisins and mushrooms - are actually dangerous for your pet and should never be used. Make certain that your healthy dog food is also safe!

What's good for humans isn't necessarily best for dogs. A vegetarian diet is generally considered to be a healthy one but a dog, being a carnivore, is used to meat in it's diet and is apt to become bored with food containing no meat or a portion significantly less than the 50% ratio.

If you don't have time to cook, there are still options for healthy dog food. Many health food stores and even some mainstream pet stores now offer organic prepared food for your dog. There's also a wide selection of holistic and organic food available online.

Your dog's health is primarily determined by it's diet so make an effort to insure that diet is a proper one. There are many options ranging from checking labels to ensure a proper mix of good ingredients to preparing your own or looking to your vet or health food store. This extra effort on your part will pay big dividends to both you and your best friend.

How Can I Perform CPR on My Dog?

Written by James Nash on in: Pets | Tags:

Do you know what to do if your puppy is suddenly lying on the ground after being seriously injured by a car accident, poisoned, electric shock, or is choking? I realize that the last thing you want to do is imagine your lovable pet being hurt in such a fashion, however, accidents do happen and if you are not prepared to administer basic first aid to your dog then it may be the last time you ever see him again should an unfortunate injury take place.

While the following is only a basic guide to giving your puppy CPR should the event arise, it is important to speak to your pet's veterinarian to see if there are any pet CPR classes that are available. Knowing pet CPR is an invaluable piece of knowledge and your vet will be more than happy to help you out and make sure that you know the proper techniques.

1. The first thing you need to do upon finding your puppy injured and lying on the floor is to check for his heartbeat. If you cannot pick up a heartbeat then you must administer CPR immediately. Here are the basic steps:

a) Place your hand on one side of your puppy's chest. If he is a large dog then roll him on one side of his body. b) Then start compressing the area of the heart on his chest in short bursting movements, one compression for each second. c) Administer one breath of air every six seconds (follow steps 2-6 below). If successful, your puppy will spring back to life.

2. The second first aid tip on your checklist is to check to see if there are any objects or obstructions in your dog's mouth. If you notice any blood or mucus, clear it out as best possible.

3) Pull the puppy's tongue out of his mouth and then carefully close his jaw as this will keep the tongue hanging out and his airway clear.

4. Next pull the lips over your dog's mouth and make them secure by wrapping your hand around the mouth and under the chin.

5. With your other hand, create a funnel to the dog's nostrils which should be as airtight as possible.

6. Now slowly but smoothly take a deep breath and exhale the air gently into his nose. Repeat this breathing action on your puppy every six seconds.

Shar Pei Training For Beginners

Written by Melissa Coleman on October 10, 2008 in: Pets | Tags:

Shar Peis are survivors. DNA testing has confirmed that they are one of the world's oldest known breeds of dog, originating in the Guangdong Province of China. Sadly, Shar Pei dogs were originally bred for dog fighting, with their loose skin and small ears making them difficult for other dogs to grasp. At one point Shar Pei were declared the most rare dog in the world, but the breed survived and is no longer considered such a rarity.

Shar Pei problem behaviors are mostly misconceptions based on the breed's dog-fighting origins and upon the baseless belief that the Shar Pei descended from the Chow Chow, a difficult and temperamental breed. Owners who encounter problems should consult dog training books for advice. Shar Pei dogs nearly became extinct and were once declared the most rare dogs in the world. Shar Pei dogs are survivors, though, and the breed is no longer considered a rarity.

Shar Pei dogs are sweet, lovable dogs that were also trained to work as watchdogs and guardians, protecting livestock from predators. The Shar Pei may look intimidating because it has been bred to wear a frown on its face; however, most Shar Peis are friendly and loyal and make excellent pets.

Shar Pei owners should socialize their dogs at an early age, with other dogs, with cats and with children. Shar Pei behavior problems such as getting along with other dogs, cats and children can be avoided by exposing the dog to these influences when it is a young puppy. That being said, an adult Shar Pei can adapt to a family with other dogs, or cats or children, however more training may be needed, especially if the dog is expected to obey commands given by a child. Owners may consult dog training books for training ideas.

Shar Peis are generally a calm, easygoing breed. They are confident dogs that need the leadership of a self-assured handler. The Shar Pei may refuse commands from children or other family members whom the dog perceives as being lower in the pecking order of the pack, but these problems can be overcome with training and reinforcement. Some dog breeds can be hard to housebreak and have housebreaking problems even into adulthood. Shar Peis, however, are very clean and, once they are old enough to control their bodily functions, are extremely unlikely to urinate or defecate inside the house.

Some Shar Pei owners complain that their dogs bark to excess, no doubt because of the breed's origin as a vigilant watchdog and guardian. Shar Pei dogs have a tendency to bark at strangers who approach or newcomers who enter the family home. These problems, like other Shar Pei problem behavior, can almost always be overcome with patient, consistent discipline. Dog training books are highly recommended as aids for training the Shar Pei.

Shar Peis have been known to help themselves to food left out on countertops. This mischievous behavior can be remedied by the owner's denying the dog access to the kitchen unless the owner is present.

All dogs, the Shar Pei included, need regular exercise but Shar Pei dogs have a tendency to overheat. Owners must watch the dogs carefully to avoid overheating during exercise, especially in hot weather. Looking back at the Shar Pei's origins as a fighting dog, then its comeback from near extinction, the breed's survival and endurance to become the faithful companion and family pet that it is today is remarkable and admirable.
