Choose Teak For Your Next Bedroom Furniture Purchase

Landscaping-Outdoor-Decorating No Comments »

by Pam Landry

Your first though about teak bedroom furniture might be that it is out of style because that is what you remember your grandparents having when you were growing up. While it is true teak has been a popular material for a long time, today's bed room furniture has a ton of style and it is very modern in its appeal.

There is something classy about a bedroom with teak wood elements because the quality of the wood is of the highest standard. While your grandma may have been first in line for some of the stereotypical offerings with old Victorian styling, the truth is that teak wood is not about the style as much as the substance.

Teak is also less common than many other woods and this drives the prices of the material up. The higher costs do come with a benefit and that is that most furniture pieces made from teak are constructed with extra attention to detail resulting in quality products.

Wood is also a material that can add a lot of warmth to a room. This feeling of warm is all psychological but it can go a long way to making a room more comfortable especially when it is chilly outdoors. Teak wood is also a very dimensionally stable wood so it won't wear itself out by contacting and expanding with weather changes like other woods might.

Teak is a high end material and this means that it is only used in high quality furniture pieces. This usually translates into high quality construction and craftsmanship of all of the pieces. Sturdy, well, constructed and durable are all welcome characteristics of well crafted teak furniture.

The quality of the pieces and the teak material shout out high-end class and elegance. It will often provide its owners an extra sense of luxury that goes far beyond the cost of the pieces in the long run. This is not the stuff you will see in a college dorm room.

There are many modern styles of beds that meld multiple types of materials together for an even more elegant and powerful look. Teak mixed with wrought iron is a current favourite. You will typically find all of the secondary pieces, dressers and night stands, in the same materials and styles as the beds. Buying a bedroom set will ensure a high quality set of bedroom furniture that goes together well.

How To Age A Cigar Using A Humidor

Health & Fitness No Comments »
by Joe Shelman-Walm

Cigar afficionado's swear that like a fine wine, a quality cigar gets better if it has been aged using a process that is simple, providing you start with the right ingredients. People pay lots of money for a quality aged cigar, but you don't have to fork out lots of cash in order to have a semblence of what they enjoy. As long as you start with a good quality cigar and a good cigar humidor, you too can age your cigars from your own home.

Start with a quality cigar if you are going to age them yourself. If you use a cheap cigar, you will probably be disappointed with the end result and the time will have been wasted. It takes about a year for the ageing process to complete. This is probably the minimum time you should allow. A rule of thumb when choosing is to find one that you find too strong or odourous, and this will probably be a good candidate.

A quality cigar humidor is what you use to age your chosen cigars. There is a requirement for a stable envronment during this process, and experts use a 70-70 rule, which states that the cigar humidor should be at 70 degrees farenheit and 70% humidity during this ageing process.

Maintaining the stability of the environment around the cigars is paramount in the ageing process, this is why a good quality cigar humidor is used. If you have changes in the environment constantly, this will cause the cigar to expand and contract, which can lead to cracking and even worse case destroying very flavours you are trying to develop.

When buying your cigar humidor, try to buy one with a cedar lining. The oils in the wood are aromatic and these mix with the oils in the tobacco over time. Ideally the space in the humidor should be about twice the volume of the cigars that it holds. Getting the mix right will help the ageing of your cigar will result in a quality cigar once the process is finished, one that you can enjoy, and one that won't cost you the earth.

Varieties of Office Furniture

This article is about using wood furniture or alternatives to help save the environment.

Solid Wood Office Furniture Offers Elegance and Sophistication

In keeping up with the green house effect, the environmentalists have warned against the use of wood office furniture to allow the earth to recover and grow more wood. Many businesses have complied with this request by purchasing alternatives to wood office furniture such as wrought iron or steel office furniture. While this may be sufficient for many offices, the nicest and most elegant furniture is still solid wood office furniture. Many believe that the richer your office looks to the public, the more successful you look and, thus, will have more business.

What's So Special About Solid Wood Office Furniture

Solid Wood Office Furniture has a special effect which it brings to an office or building that no other material can compare with. If you've ever gone into a furniture store that sells wood furniture, you know what I'm talking about. The minute you walk into the building, you can smell the wood and the room just has an elegant feel to it. The same is true with an office that is furnished with wood office furniture. Solid wood furniture has an elegance, beauty and functionality that you just don't get with other types of office furniture.

One of the most important features of solid wood furniture is that it allows for exquisite detail and craftsmanship that you just can't get from other types of furniture. A mahogany executive desk or hand-detailed teak wood chair just can't compare to a steel office desk, regardless of how fancy the steel desk may be. Wood paneling is also very popular in the decor of an office. While there are many substitutes for this, none can compare in appearance.

Many types of furnishings go into the furnishing of an office. Some popular items are desks, chairs, bookshelves, multi-functional cabinets and couches. These furniture items are available in laminates, fiber, plywood, etc., but nothing can compare with solid wood furniture. Many offices that have couches for the relaxation of their clients use quality sofa slip covers as a way to protect the furniture from damage.

Some items in the office that look very attractive in wood are wood chairs and multi-functional desks. Wood chairs are comfortable and very easy to maintain, needing nothing more than washing and an occasional polishing to keep their "new" appearance. Some of the more popular woods for chairs are teak, mahogany, mango, etch. Multi-function desks are also very functional and attractive. They also coordinate with any other type of furnishings you may have, including quality sofa slip covers on your office couch.

Building a deck with just six steps

by Adam Peters

You too can build a deck.

All you need is a few dozen screws, nails, bolts, posts, gravel, stain, thinner, drill, hammer, measuring tape. This article offers some tips about how to build a deck that is strong, economical and comes up to the owners expectations.

Six Tips For Decks Built to Last

You too can build a deck. All you need is a few dozen screws, nails, bolts, posts, gravel, stain, thinner, drill, hammer, measuring tape. This article offers some tips about how to build a deck that is strong, economical and comes up to the owners expectations

Tip #1

Doing things the old-fashioned way may not always be the best idea. Many good software packages offer help in designing your deck. Their services may include alternative designs, list of materials, tools that are needed, measurements and sometimes even building rules.

Tip #2

Once you have carefully planned it out, you need to get materials. There are several newer options available besides pine, cedar and rosewood trees. Manufacturers offer other materials that look and feel very much like wood. These materials are cost effective as they require less maintenance worries and are stronger and less subject to damage.

Tip #3

It is important that the deck be strongly founded. You may want to get professional help if you don't have the tools and skills to level prepare ground, create good concrete pier holes and pour concrete. You must then apply vertical anchors at the appropriate time.

Tip #4

Building codes in most localities determine the required distance between support piers. Since most lumber comes in 8 foot or 12 foot lengths, making support distances equal to or less than that leads to fewer cuts.

Tip #5

In most cases, ledger boards lay up against the house to support the joists (support beams under the walking surface). If it is moved away from the wall, it can prevent corrosion by moisture.

Tip #6

Prefer screws and bolts over nails. This is because screws last longer and work better. Nails on the other hand rust pretty soon. This obviously will lead to the weakening of connections of the deck.

Get Prepared For a Spring Fence by Planning Now

Home Improvement No Comments »
by Michael Little

Thinking you want to put off fence building and maintenance until the Spring, say, between March and November? Well, the reality is that winter is an even better time for planning your fence construction and repairs. Between December and February, your fence is getting beat on by severe weather, so now's the time to inspect closely.

You know what they say about making plans. But try making plans when you are too busy to think, and you'll be glad to have a few slower months in the winter for walking the area you want to enclose and finding the issues you'll be dealing with soon. Tree stumps. Rocks. They stick out on the barren winter landscape, don't they?

Though the earth may be to hard at this time to be able to perform the function of digging and concrete work, it's a great time to measure and do your research on exactly what you want or need for your area. Finding out if purchasing pre-formed panels will work or do you need to build your fence from scratch, one slat or picket at a time. There are some places and applications that you may need to do both.

There are lots of good sources for the information you need to gather next. Books, magazines, as well as the library and internet all contain a vast wealth of fencing knowledge, both practical and abstract. Things to discover include material options for your geographic region. Some woods do not make good fencing solutions in some areas, due to insect and water penetration.

If your price point is such that you cannot afford a higher grade wood fence and you have to go with a lesser wood product, there are a couple of options that will help with the overall life of the fence. One is to treat the wood with a sealer, which may or may not be feasible. If it's a very large fence, this might be more work than you care to do.

A second alternative is to invest in fence post caps. While most believe these caps are purely for decoration, the fact is that post caps are designed to protect the top of the post from water and insect penetration. While these can be installed during the winter months by using finishing nails, most manufacturers recommend that you glue them to the top of the post.

If you live in a particularly cold climate, you need to be aware that rain and snow are horrible enemies of the wood fence. As rain penetrates wood and freezes, it expands and can cause nasty cracks to form. These can later become insect hideaways, and before a few seasons have gone by, your beautiful fence is ready to fall over. Now is a great time to walk out and inspect your existing fence line for signs of water and insect damage.

In addition to the ever-popular wood fence, vinyl and metal fencing options each have distinct advantages worth investigating. Privacy and picket fences can be made of vinyl and yet resemble wood very well. Wrought iron and aluminum fencing makes an attractive yard perimeter as well. There are lots of choices, but I hope you'll agree, there's no time like the present to think about and plan your fence project.
